Poetry Month 2
I think it would be cool to read a poem over the loudspeaker maybe once every Friday during poetry month. We could have three people go down to the main office early that day, and alternate verses. This way each person can get a chance to read. We could do different time periods. The first can be from the old English time perod, then get more recent until we get to a current poem. This would be a fun way to raise our fellow classmates' awareness about poetry week. Please tell me what you think.-Alex H.

I think that sounds cool! We just have to make sure that the poems are short so that they'll let us read them and we won't lose people's attention. Also, as far as which poems, I think if we choose ones that are simpler, at least in form (i.e. rhyming), people may actually pay attention to it because it will be more easily understandable. Perhaps people could start suggesting poems?

simple, but still creative sounds good. We don't wantto read something that is too bland. And I agree that it should be short.-Alex
ReplyDeleteI think thats a really good idea. Maybe some more well known poets so that people have some idea of who they are and of course some Billy Collins for Laz!

So short, simple, and, as Alex said, interesting! I also think that using well-known poets is a good idea too. So it sounds like a plan to me. Also, I was thinking at first maybe not too much dark stuff, simply because it's at the beginning of the day. But then I thought that darkness might catch attention and give everyone something to think about. What do you think, as far as subject matter?
ReplyDeleteNow, as for the day, I think there are only 3 Fridays we're in school for April, so I was thinking Thursday might be our best bet since it seems we have more Thursdays than any other days in April. Also, are we assuming that everyone will read or should we just use whoever is comfortable reading over the intercom? We'll need to split up into groups accordingly.
Finally, I was just thinking, since obviously nobody will know WHY we're doing all this (posters, announcements, etc.), why don't we preface all of our annoucements with something like, "In honor of April being Poetry Month, we would like to share a short poem with you this morning," or something like that. (I apologize for all of that being one sentence. I tend to go on.) Also, I know there's that display case next to the auditorium that shows stuff for things like Black History Month. Maybe we could put something awesome in there? I can ask in the office how that could be arranged. Anyway, this was a long post, and I commend you for getting to the end! See you in class!

I think reading poems on the announcements is a good idea, but we need to look really hard for poems that will catch peoples attention. (Personally, I never listen to the announcements.) I was also thinking about setting up a school wide poetry contest? Laz always reads us the letters he gets, but maybe we can have something like that for MHS only. There would obviously need to be some kind of reward, but maybe it could be in the yearbook or we could see if it could go somewhere in the Moorestown Sun. It's kind of a stretch, but just thought.

I think that's a great idea! And it is a bit of a stretch, but that's okay, and doesn't mean we can't do it. It's too late for yearbook stuff, I think, but the Sun sounds really cool. It wouldn't hurt to at least look into it. Also, if we were to set up a contest, how would it work? How would we judge (assuming our class would be the judges), when would the deadline be, would there be restrictions on length, when would we judge? Why don't you try calling the Sun and proposing the idea to them, and then get back to us here on the blog? (Personally I would call, I find it more personal and efficient than email.) Their number should be either online or in the paper. I think if you phrase it that your creative writing class at Moorestown High is thinking of holding a poetry contest (make it known that it's just school-wide) and want the prize for winning to be getting published in their paper. They'll probably like that and hopefully be willing to do it for the local high school. I think it's a great idea though, and we should totally try to make it happen.

ReplyDeleteWow, you guys are all seriously thinking of great ideas! I like them all really!
ReplyDeleteI reallyyy like the idea of reading poems over the intercom..But you are right we need ones that catch people's attention. Probably we can do that from rhymes, well known poets, and topics that teenagers would generally be able to relate to and stuff. But I have no problem reading over the intercom!
I like the idea for the case display too. We could definately get the library to help us with that. I don't see why we couldn't display for poetry month but who knows.
-Sarah
I agree, Sarah, rhymes and well-known poets would definetely catch attention. I too am willing to read. Now we just need to find some poems!
ReplyDeleteWe'll need someone to go and talk to Ms. Poole about doing a poetry display in the lobby display case for April. Probably Alex, since I think she knows her well. We should get that done soon though, so there's time to cut through the very possible administrative red tape.

Before I saw Olivia's post, I emailed the Moorestown Sun about our poetry contest. They emailed me back and said, "We'd be happy to publish it, so long as it isn't a really, really long poem. If it's a few hundred words, or less, no problem." So I think by that we would just have to set a word or line limit for rules if we do decided to go that rout.
ReplyDelete-Missy
That sounds awesome, Missy! And I think a line limit is better than a word limit. I think it would be okay to have it be a "give-or-take" limit, though. Now we just need to get the word out! Perhaps a mass email to all English teachers explaining about the contest and then flyers around school? Keeping in mind that we need time to judge and decide on a winner, what were you thinking as a contest deadline and how long were you thinking we'd give ourselves before delivering the school (I think a PA announcement would be fitting)and winner with a result? Also, will we have any certain criteria when we judge or will it just be whichever one we collectively like best will win? Also, how will contestants submit their pieces? Email to Mrs. Lopez/Laz (whoever will be with us) or on paper and dropped off at our classroom? This sounds really exciting, I can't wait to get into it!
