Poetry Month

Hey everyone! So I was thinking a little bit about planning an activity for April and I was thinking that perhaps we could "bring poetry to the masses" with a slightly larger scale Poetry Slam than just one at MHS. I realize that it's not very original, but I know people at the Moorestown Library (wow, that sounds sketchy), and I thought maybe a Poetry Slam there could be fun. It would be open to the whole community and could therefore reach more people. We could also do an event at the library for children, which I think could be quite successful. We could either do the readings ourselves, like a story hour, or allow children to read some poems they either enjoy or even wrote themselves, or a little of both. I went to a poetry workshop at the library some years ago, and it was really fun and well-attended. So tell me what you think!

  1. Wow, so I feel very dorky for realizing I am replying like 10 min after you posted this haha but anyway, I think that would be a good idea! I think something at the Moorestown Library could be cool to get the community involved and everything. Whether we do it for children or any age it doesn't really matter, I like the idea!

Although, I think we need to make sure either A) High School kids will attend or B) We find some way to specifically also reach out to MHS just because we want to make sure the school knows too! :)

  2. I think thats an awesome idea. We could make an announcement about it at school and hang flyers and I'm sure Mr. Lazarow would be willing to make some announcements in his classes about it. Would you be allowed to put some sort of flyer at the library?

I was also thinking that maybe we could pick a date to all come in with some inspirational quotes, lyrics, or short excerpts of writing and make posters and hang them around the school. We could each bring in anywhere from 3 to 5 and pick the ones we like best. Just a thought. Let me know what you guys think!

P.S. We all owe Olivia a huge thank you for her idea to get notes out of school for Billy Collins! LOVE YOU OLIVIA!

  3. Emma that's a great idea. I really liked how they did the posters last year, so I think posting inspiration quotes and lyrics and everything would be fun!

  4. I definetely agree that we should make sure that the HS is involved and knows about our event. I think that flyers and announcement are a great idea and I can help get the announcement forms and the flyers approved (I did it in Potter Club).

Emma, I think that's an awesome idea! When do you think we could do the vote? Would it work to do it here on the blog and then come in 12th to make the posters? However, I did notice last year that the posters fell down really easily (I reposted a few, haha). We might want to find a way to make them stay up better and make sure we put them places they won't be torn down, like the one above the water fountain.

    P.S. Haha, thanks Emma. ;)

  5. Maybe we could make some sort of announcement about bringing in three to five quotes from poems or songs people like and use a small amount of class time to vote (like in the beginning of class when we usually read) and then agree on two or three days to come after school to make the posters. I'd be willing to bring the supplies and all for it.

Oh and we need to discuss who is going to carpool with ho to Billy Collins at some point as well. I can fit 4 people!

  6. Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. But I think we should all help out with supplies, or at least more than just one person.

Yes! Indeed we do. I'll make a new post about it. :)

  7. Hey guys, I'm going to go ahead with the library thing and try to get that set up for April. If young kids are going to come it'll need to be later in the afternoon but the library's only open until 5 on Fridays and weekdays are school nights. Maybe Saturday morning? Sunday afternoon (they're open from 1 to 5pm)?

  8. Olivia, I remember you saying in class today that Sundays would probably be best for younger kids and I agree on that.

We just need to make sure because actually our Spring Break includes two weekends (sundays) April 3 and April 10 (right?). I knnow that I'm virtually going to be away the whole entire spring break and other people may too, even the young kids we are trying to target to come so maybe a sunday later in the month would work better. Just a thought!

  9. MAJOR YAYS!

Okay, guys, so our Children's Poetry Slam is officially set for Sunday, April 25 from 2pm-3:30pm! I've pitched it as a "kids of all ages" event, where we will do readings of children's poetry and encourage children to read some poems that they like, or even that they wrote. I think that if we read poems that we've written also, it may make the children more comfortable sharing theirs. The children's librarian also suggested we have children's poetry books all around the room so they can look around at them and maybe use them to read from. I'm going to be working with library staff to get this event onto the Sun's community calendar and it's possible they may even run a short blurb about it. I'll also be making up a flyer soon, so I'll bring that in to class for everyone to okay it, or to make changes. I can get the word out into Roberts, UES, MFS, various churches in town, and possibly OLGC. So yes. I'm quite excited and I hope you all are too!

    P.S. Don't forget quotes Tuesday! :)
